VanderCook College of Music's institutional archives, the
H.E. Nutt Archives, houses a collection of over 100 original
sound recordings dating from the 1930s. Many of the earliest
recordings were done using a portable recording device that
would create records onsite, at concerts or lectures. They
contain recordings of Summer music camps in Texas and Michigan,
the Midwest Band Clinic in Chicago, and lectures by educators
and musicians such as H.A. VanderCook, the founder of the
school.
Since many of these older recordings are in fragile condition
and can not be played on modern turntables, the archives has
decided to have them professionally transferred to CD. Decisions
need to be made regarding clean-up of background noise versus
distortion of the original sound. For the spoken recordings,
the archives decided to do a maximum clean-up of background
noise so students and others could use the recordings for
research purposes.
